This weekend is an incredible art weekend in Traverse City with an art-themed Friday Night Live and the Downtown Art Fair starting at 10 AM on Saturday!

Over the weekend of the Traverse City Wine & Art Festival (Aug 19 & 20) Traverse City comes alive with art and artists.
On Friday night (Aug 19) from 5:30 – 9:00 PM, it’s Friday Night Live. The theme is “Art’s Alive” and you can celebrate the arts with the Great Lakes Children’s Museum Kid’s Art Fair along with live entertainment on Front Street.
Then on Saturday (Aug 20) from 10 AM – 5 PM, about 70 Midwest and national artists will showcase their work along Cass Street for the annual Downtown Art Fair on Saturday, August 20.

I had such a great time last year, but this year I have a wedding to attend! Hopefully next year people will NOT schedule weddings for this day! For those of you thinking of attending, definitely GO! It is so awesome, and this year, be prepared to dance! Relax and take a few friends! Great way to spend a Saturday!

The “Fashion Is Art” competition at the 2011 Traverse City Wine & Art Festival on August 20th offers all festival-goers a chance to win our grand prize valued at over $1000!
Festival attendees who wish to participate are invited to dress-to-impress to win prizes. Judges will be circulating the festival selecting their favorite Fashion is Art attendees. Judging will be based on the most creative, flashy, bold, original and dramatic examples of FASHION IS ART.
“Our festival is all about delighting everyone who attends with a feast for all the senses,” festival coordinator Laura Herd explained. “This year we’re doing even more with the atmosphere and performance artists, and we wanted to create a way for people who attend to be a part it all as well. We’re just looking for your own expressions of style. You don’t have to spend a lot of money and you certainly want to dress to enjoy our beautiful setting on the lawn at the Grand Traverse Commons.”
Our Grand Prize Winner will receive an incredible package Spa Getaway at Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa. The package features one night suite for two along with your choice of one 50-Minute treatment from our Spa Menu for each of you. Enjoy unlimited fitness classes and access to the motion studio during your stay plus the use of spa facilities including the luxurious infrared sauna and steam room, private meditation lounge, and outdoor garden with hot tub. The Glen Arbor Art Association will host its third annual Plein Air Paint Out this Saturday, August 6th. This popular event hosts artists from throughout the Midwest who arrive early in the morning at GAAA to have their canvases or papers stamped to verify that their paintings have been done on this day. Artists then find their ideal spots for a day of plein-air painting before returning with their completed works for display to the Glen Arbor Art Association in the afternoon for a juried exhibit and “wet painting” sale and reception. Painter and retired professor art, Harvey Gordon will be this year’s guest juror and will award three cash prizes. A fourth prize this year will be the People’s Choice Award determined by popular vote.
The Wet Painting Reception and Sale is open to the public from 5:30-7:30 pm at GAAA, located off Lake Street across from Cherry Republic. Paintings may be purchased on a “first come” basis beginning at 5:45 pm. Once again, there will also be a wine tasting provided by the 24 wineries of the Traverse City Wine & Art Festival along with light appetizers. Proceeds from the sales will benefit the art association’s enrichment programs. A $10 donation per person donation is requested.
Plein-air painting refers to the technique of painting out-of-doors which was initiated by the French Impressionists in the mid-nineteenth century. The challenge is to paint or draw directly and spontaneously from nature during a very limited period of time. Leelanau County’s beauty provides the perfect setting for a paint-out event.
